3 Cs for Starting School Strong: A Norland Nanny's Guide

As a parent or carer, the start of a new school year can bring a mix of excitement and anxiety for both you and your child. Will they settle in well? How can you support them through this transition? After 14 years of experience as a Norland Nanny, I would love to share some things that I have found are so important for starting school strong - the 3 Cs: Consistency , Connection , and Communication .

Consistency: Setting the Foundation

Consistency is key in providing your child with a sense of stability and predictability, especially during times of change. Consider establishing clear boundaries and daily routines like designated car seats to save the daily debate over who gets to sit in the front, or an after-school snack box to prevent the post school kitchen raid. These consistent boundaries will reduce stress for everyone and build a sense of security for your child.

Connection: Bridging the Gap

Consistency

Separation anxiety is a common hurdle for many children starting school. Strengthening your connection with them through books such as "The Invisible String". Also use phrases to help them feel kept in mind. For example, "When I was at work today I was eating my lunch and I thought about you and I wondered what you were having for your lunch". Small gestures can reassure them that you're thinking about them and love them, even when apart.

Communication: Building Partnerships

Effective communication with your child's school and teachers plays a vital role in their academic journey. Share any concerns or challenges your child may be facing, and collaborate to try and find solutions. I nannied for a child who lost his jumper, evey day! I spoke to his teacher and she said that he takes it off in other classrooms, such as the IT suite and puts it on the back of his chair. We decided to get him a small drawstring backpack to keep his things in. Problem solved - no more lost jumpers!

Wrapping Up

Small changes can lead to significant progress for your child.Remember, each child is unique, so adapt these principles to suit your child's individual needs. Your support and guidance will lay a powerful foundation to start school strong.
