How To Make Summer Holidays with Kids a Breeze: Top Tips for Parents and Carers

Summer holidays are here, and as a nanny I have cared for children through 14 summers so I can relate to how exhilarating yet daunting this time can be. The prospect of weeks with our children off school might come with a mix of excitement and a tad bit of anxiety. But fear not, I've compiled some top tips to help make this summer a smooth sailing season for both you and your little ones.

Routine: The Backbone of Your Day

Establish a 'holiday' routine. No need to be as strict as during the term, but a bit of structure goes a long way. From a leisurely breakfast to getting dressed and engaging in some independent play, a routine sets the tone for the day ahead.

Balance: Keeping the Energy Flowing

Strike a balance between action-packed days and quiet moments at home. Plan exciting outings alongside relaxing days indoors. Engage in simple yet fun activities like crafting, building an obstacle course, splashing in water, or moulding playdough creations.

Playdates: More Than Just Fun

Playdates can be a lifesaver during the holidays. Not only do children enjoy the company, but it also offers you a chance to catch up with fellow parents and carers. Utilise playdates for messy activities as you have another pair of hands to help with the clear up!

Empathy: Understanding Your Child's World

Remember, what may seem like an exciting holiday agenda to us could overwhelm our children. Be patient and understanding. Acknowledge their feelings and provide comfort when needed. Stepping into their shoes can make a world of difference.

Self-Care: Fit Your Oxygen Mask First

Taking care of yourself is vital. Don't hesitate to take a breather while your children engage in independent play. Sip on a cup of coffee or simply unwind for a moment. Remember, your well-being is crucial in setting the tone for the entire family.
